Public Interest Lawyering Workshop at NLSIU, Bangalore: June 1 – 2 | Register by May 20!

The National Law School of India invites applications from practising lawyers and legal professionals for a capacity-building workshop on ‘public interest lawyering’ to be held on June 1 & 2 (Sat-Sun), 2024, at the NLSIU campus in Bengaluru. The workshop is being organised by the Ford Foundation Chair on Public Interest Law and the IBA-CLE Professorial Chair in Continuing Legal Education at NLSIU. The workshop will focus on public interest lawyering, examining the strategic role of public interest law in bringing about social change and the challenges confronting public interest law today.

About the Workshop

This non-residential workshop is open to practising lawyers and legal professionals who are:

  • keen to develop varied perspectives on public interest lawyering in India
  • examine the strategic role of public interest law in bringing about social change and current challenges
  • identify and hone the skill sets necessary to work in public interest law, and
  • interact with lawyers and academicians working in the area of public interest law

This workshop examines the possibilities and limitations of public interest lawyering and how legal and non-legal priorities underpin public interest practice. The workshop will draw upon the experience of public interest lawyers, scholarship on public interest law, and expert narratives. The workshop seeks to enhance the skill set of legal professionals and provide a greater understanding of how legal and non-legal strategies can effectively combine to initiate social transformation.

This is a closed, in-person workshop open to the first 25 participants. The workshop will commence at 9 am on June 1, 2024 and conclude at 2.00 pm on June 2, 2024. The workshop fee will include lunch on both days and refreshments. There shall be no on-campus accommodation as this is a non-residential programme. The schedule of the workshop will be shared with the
participants closer to the date of the workshop.


We welcome applications from young law practitioners and legal professionals interested in developing theoretical perspectives and a valuable skill set in the field of Public Interest Lawyering.

How to apply

Potential participants interested in enrolling in the course should submit a formal request for enrolment through this link by May 20, 2024 (23:59 IST) along with the following documents:

1. CV (not more than two pages)
2. Statement of Purpose (500 words – indicating why and how this workshop would be helpful for your career)
3. Copy of the Bar Council Identity Card

Selection shall be primarily based on the candidate’s CV, academic and professional background, and statement of purpose. During the selection process, diversity of backgrounds shall be given due consideration.


As there will be limited slots, registration will be based on a selection and subject to full payment of a participation fee of Rs. 6000 + 18% GST, along with a small platform fee. Payment must be made within four days of communication to those selected.


Participants will be expected to participate during all the sessions. A certificate of participation will be issued to participants attending all the sessions. Please note that no fee will be refunded should the participant cancel the registration or fail to participate in the workshop.
