Nyayanama 2025: Academic Simulation by CCL | DNLU Jabalpur [Cash Prizes upto 80k]

The Centre for Constitutional Law (CCL) at Dharmashastra National Law University (DNLU), Jabalpur, invites students and scholars to participate in its flagship event, Nyayanama, a unique academic simulation.

About the Hosts

Dharmashastra National Law University (DNLU), Jabalpur, was established by the Madhya Pradesh National Law University Act 24 of 2018 and unveiled in 2018. DNLU envisions itself as a center of excellence in legal education and research. The university aims to disseminate quality education and training, promote the culture of research, and nurture a vibrant legal culture essential for a developing country.

The Centre for Constitutional Law (CCL), was established in 2020. CCL acts as a dynamic platform where students and scholars can critically engage with contemporary constitutional issues beyond the traditional classroom setting. The Centre aims to foster constitutional literacy, nurture a deeper understanding of constitutional principles, and contribute to policy-oriented research and dialogue through its academic and co-curricular endeavors. The CCL is guided by Dr. Ashit Kumar Srivastava, Assistant Professor of Law and Director of CCL.

Understanding Nyayanama: The Simulation

Nyayanama is described as a one-of-a-kind academic simulation. It uniquely combines the deliberative depth found in a Mock Parliament or Constituent Assembly simulation with the diplomatic structure of a Model UN.

This event is curated specifically to ignite critical thinking, collaborative drafting, and constitutional debate. Participants in Nyayanama are challenged to navigate complex party politics, ideological divergences, and the intricate process of constitutional drafting, all within the framework of a fictional yet realistic nation.

Competition Format Overview

The event structure is divided into two phases: Preliminary Rounds and the Main Event.

Preliminary Rounds

All registered participants must pay a preliminary registration fee. The participants will be presented with a common scenario/situation, inspired by contemporary constitutional or socio-political issues, along with an associated motion. The problem statement will be provided in a shared drive.

Participants must submit a two-minute video articulating their stance on the motion via a Google Form. The video submission should be recorded in a well-lit environment with clear audio and video quality.

Evaluation in this round focuses on two parameters:

  1. Oratorical proficiency: This includes clarity, persuasiveness, and effective articulation within a limited timeframe.
  2. Critical Reasoning: This assesses the understanding of the subject matter and the participant’s ability to engage with it critically.

The Main Event

A total of 40 participants will be shortlisted from the preliminary round to proceed to the main event, which will be held at the DNLU Campus. Shortlisted participants must pay a second registration fee, which covers food arrangements during the course of the event.

Key elements of the Main Event include:

  • Materials: Participants receive, beforehand, a detailed profile of a hypothetical country and portfolios for five to six political parties. The party ideologies, roles, and functions will be compiled in a portfolio, released alongside the Country Dossier. The full set of materials (Dossier, Portfolios, Rulebook, and motions) will be made available to shortlisted participants via a shared drive shared through email.
  • Party Assignment: Upon completing desk registration, participants are randomly assigned to one of the political parties via a Draw of Lots. These parties will be of uneven size, reflecting the dynamics of real-world political systems.
  • Rounds and Motions: The main event consists of four rounds, each accompanied by a motion. Each participant is allotted a two-minute window to express their stance on the motion in every round.
  • Constitutional Drafting: Prior to the commencement of each round, each party receives a tailored draft of the Constitution. Parties are granted one hour to outline and submit their proposals. The finalized draft must be submitted to the Organizing Committee via email within the stipulated timeframe.
  • Voting and Scoring: Members will vote on motions proposed by each party through a secret ballot during a limited time span. Extra points will be awarded to every member of the party whose proposals, written in the constitution draft, get passed during the motions.
  • Unmoderated Caucus: The exercise will also include an unmoderated caucus, with details and rules provided in the Rulebook.
