Prefatory Note
Intellectual Property (IP) is a critical incentive for innovation and creativity, which are key to the success of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The World Intellectual Property Day 2024 campaign focuses on IP and the SDGs:
Building our common future with innovation and creativity. IP rights play a crucial role in encouraging innovation by providing exclusive rights and incentives for inventors and creators, enabling them to commercialize their ideas, attract investment, and foster further research and development in sustainable technologies. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 goals established by the United Nations to achieve a more sustainable and equitable world by 2030. These goals encompass a wide range of interconnected global issues such as poverty eradication, climate action, clean energy, responsible consumption, and gender equality. To contribute to achieving each SDG, good international collaboration and innovations with good sustainable practices across different sectors are essential.
Companies that demonstrate their contributions to specific SDG goals often enjoy better brand values and sustainability reputations. Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria are being used by different countries and companies to assess the sustainability and ethical impacts of various investments and business practices. Companies that prioritize ESG considerations with good ESG strategies will typically create better long-term value with sustainable profitability while minimizing their negative impacts on the environment and society.
These complex concepts are mutually reinforcing and interdependent. Innovation helps sustainable companies drive progress towards achieving the various SDGs by developing sustainable technologies, products, and services. IP protection (IPR) elps companies incentivize and reward innovation while fostering sustainable developments. Good ESG considerations help companies enhance their corporate values and develop better strategies and plans. Collectively, these factors and linkages should contribute to the transition of sustainable businesses globally
towards a more sustainable and inclusive future with enhanced business values.
Sustainable business values are maintained by IPR, SDG, and ESG, which are continually evolving with new legislations by various countries and international organizations. The I3PM SDG and ESG Committee has been discussing these important issues and changes, and it is proposed to propose and develop a new type of IP strategy that puts SDG/ESG plus sustainability and circular economy at its centre.
