About The National Human Rights Commission
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India is an independent statutory body established on October 12, 1993, by the Parliament of India under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, in conformity with the United Nations endorsed Paris Principles. The Commission’s core objective is the protection and promotion of human rights, which it pursues by inquiring into complaints of violations, reviewing international treaties to recommend their effective implementation, and spreading awareness on human rights among the public. It is entrusted with upholding the rights relating to life, liberty, equality, and dignity of the individual as guaranteed by the Constitution of India.
The NHRC stands as a distinguished institution of national and global repute, led by a Chairperson who has previously served as the Chief Justice of India or as a Judge of the Supreme Court. Recognized as a role model among National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) worldwide, the NHRC has been at the forefront of monitoring and promoting the effective protection of human rights. Through this collaboration, the Commission reaffirms its unwavering commitment to advancing environmental justice and upholding the fundamental right of every individual to live with dignity in a healthy environment.
The competition aims to provide an engaging platform for law students across the country to explore pressing contemporary issues at the intersection of environmental justice and human rights. It encourages participants to develop critical legal reasoning, strengthen their advocacy skills, and reflect on questions of responsibility, equity, justice, and the protection of human rights in the face of evolving global challenges.
