About the Centre (CDSHL)
The Centre for Disability Studies & Health Laws (CDSHL) at National Law University, Assam, is a pioneering institution committed to advancing disability rights and inclusive legal discourse in the North-East region of India. Anchored in the principle of “Nothing About Us Without Us,” the Centre brings together voices from academia, research, government, NGOs, and civil society to build participatory and rights-based approaches to disability and health law. As the only Centre of its kind in the region, CDSHL addresses long-standing challenges such as difficult terrain, scattered habitation, poor connectivity, weak healthcare infrastructure, recurring natural disasters, and low awareness around disability rights. In this context, the Centre serves as a model for transforming dialogue into action—bridging the gap between legal theory and lived realities. It champions the right to ‘act’ as emphasised in modern disability jurisprudence and aligns its mission with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and national laws. Through sustained advocacy, research, and community engagement, CDSHL seeks not just to highlight exclusion but to actively reshape systems toward inclusion and accessibility.
