International Webinar on the Role of Intellectual Property Rights in the Circular Economy by the Department of Stdies in Law, University of Mysore: Register Now!

Prefatory Note

The Circular Economy (CE) is a transformative model that seeks to minimize waste and make the most of available resources. Unlike the traditional linear economy, which follows the “take, make, dispose” paradigm, the circular economy emphasizes the importance of reuse, recycling, repair, and sustainable product design. It is gaining traction worldwide as industries, governments, and consumers look for ways to combat climate change, reduce waste, and conserve natural resources.

Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), on the other hand, are legal protections granted to creators for their inventions, designs, and creations. These rights incentivize innovation and creativity, enabling individuals and organizations to protect their innovations and capitalize on their investments in research and development (R&D).

The intersection of IPR and the circular economy offers intriguing possibilities. Intellectual property can play a crucial role in driving circular business models by protecting innovations in sustainable design, recycling technologies, and business strategies that promote longevity, repair, and reuse. However, the relationship between IPR and the circular economy is complex and multifaceted, raising questions about how IP can be leveraged to encourage rather than hinder the transition to a more sustainable, circular model.

Call for Papers

We invite submissions of original research papers, case studies, and policy analyses from academicians, practitioners, researchers, and students in the field of law. The Editorial Board welcomes articles on the following themes:

  • How can IP protections, such as patents, trademarks, and design rights, support the development of sustainable technologies and circular business models?
  • How can we balance the protection of IP with the broader societal goal of sustainable development?
  • Can open-source IP and collaborative business models help scale up the circular economy?
  • How can IP be harmonized with EPR policies to facilitate product reuse, repair, and recycling?

We will examine real-world case studies from companies and countries that have successfully integrated IP strategies within circular economy models. This will provide practical insights into the challenges and opportunities for IP in promoting circularity.
