About School of Law, Christ (Deemed to Be University), Bangalore
School of Law, CHRIST (Deemed to be University) (SLCU), Bangalore, is a part of CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Bangalore, which was founded by Carmelites of Mary Immaculate. SLCU boasts of unmatched infrastructure consisting of well-equipped audio-visual classrooms, resourceful libraries with the latest legal publications and journals, an information centre with all-time Internet connectivity, conference halls, mini-auditorium, and above all, a conducive environment to study and explore numerous possibilities in life.
Constitutional Law Studies and Orientation Committee
CLSOC (Constitutional Law Studies and Orientation Committee) headed by Ms. Snigdha Singh and Mr. Vetha Philos (Professors of Law, CHRIST (Deemed to be University)). The CLSOC aims to organise events such as discussion forums, essay competitions, quizzes, guest lectures and seminars to foster deeper engagement with constitutional values. In furtherance of the same, the committee organises the 1st SLCU National Essay Writing Competition, which shall invite submissions from 12th October 2024 onwards, and results shall be declared on 26th November 2024.
The Essay Writing Competition
The CLSOC (CLSOC) is excited to announce the 1st essay writing competition focused on Indian Constitutional Law, with broad themes of Cooperative Federalism and the Evolution of Substantive vis-à-vis Procedural Due Process. This competition encourages students, scholars, and legal enthusiasts to engage deeply with critical aspects of the Indian Constitution. Participants are invited to explore how federalism shapes the distribution of powers between the Union and States, and analyse the development of substantive and procedural due process in India’s legal framework. The competition provides a platform for thoughtful discourse on the evolving relationship between substantive justice and procedural fairness, as reflected in constitutional jurisprudence.
Eligibility
We welcome participation from the following categories of students:
- Students pursuing Five-Year/Three-Year LLB Discipline.
- Students pursuing One-Year/Two-Year LLM Discipline.
- Students pursuing any other undergraduate or postgraduate law degree from any recognized university.
Theme
1. Journey of cooperative federalism as a basic tenet since independence
- Examining the evolution of federalism through Centralization vs. decentralisation, intergovernmental relations, constitutional amendments, judicial interpretations.
- Revisiting various instances of cooperative federalism in action (e.g., GST, National Health Mission, rural development programs) and measuring their success.
- Challenges and Future: Emerging issues including fiscal federalism and regional disparities, the role of technology, and prospects for a more cooperative future.
2. Evolution of substantive vis-a-vis procedural due process
- Substantive Due Process: Expanding the Horizon of Fundamental Rights
- Balancing Substantive and Procedural Due Process in Preventive Detention Laws
- Emerging Challenges to Due Process in the Age of Technology and Surveillance
These topics are merely indicative, and the authors are free to choose any topic falling under the broad ambit of Constitutional Law.

- Winners: INR 5,000 Cash Prize
- Runner Up: INR 3,000 Cash Prize
- Second Runner Up: INR 1,000 Cash Prize
All participants will be given a participation certificate.
Formatting Guidelines
Submission guidelines:
- Submissions shall be made in .doc/.docx format
- All submissions are to be made via a google form.
- The name of the file should be the title of the essay.
- Word limit: 1500-3000 (excluding footnotes)
- Submission date: on or before 10 November 2024.
- Citations must adhere to Bluebook 20th Edition.
- Authors are strictly prohibited from revealing their identity in any part of the manuscript. Non-adherence to the same will result in immediate disqualification.
- Your essay should be error-free: grammar, spelling, punctuation etc. – your paper must be original and plagiarism free. Use of AI tools will be scanned and if detected, the essay will be disqualified.

- 26th November, 2024 – Shortlisted essays will be virtually presented to an esteemed panel of judges

The registration fee is as follows:
- Single Authorship: ₹472 /- (Inclusive of taxes)
- Co-Authorship: ₹590 /- (Inclusive of taxes)
- Inter-university teams are allowed.

- From the SELECT CATEGORY* option, choose any one of the options, either “1st SLCU-CLSOC-Co-authorship” or “1st SLCU-CLSOC-Single Authorship” as per your requirement.
- You will be directed to the next page, fill in the necessary details, and finally proceed with the payment process.
