NCLT Law Research Associate Vacancy: An Overview
The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) is inviting applications from eligible Indian nationals for the position of Law Research Associate. This engagement is purely on a contractual basis. Currently, there are a total of 2 tentative vacancies available across the Jaipur and Mumbai Benches of the NCLT.
Essential Qualifications for NCLT Law Research Associate
To be considered for the Law Research Associate assignment, candidates must meet specific criteria:
- Education: You must be a Graduate in Law (including Integrated Degree Courses like 10+2+3+3 or 10+2+5 patterns) with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks from an institution recognized by the Bar Council of India.
- Academic Record: Candidates must have passed all examinations within the duration of their course.
- Recency of Degree: Your Law Degree or LLM must have been obtained not earlier than two years as on the date of advertisement (18.08.2025) or any other specified date.
- Current Students: Students in the fifth year of a Five-Year Integrated Law Course or the third year of a Three-Year Law Course (after graduation in any stream) are also eligible to apply, provided they furnish proof of acquiring the Law qualification before commencing the assignment.
- Age Limit: The candidate’s age shall not be above 30 years as of the last date for receipt of applications, i.e., 18.09.2025.
- Skills & Knowledge:
- Research and Analytical Skills: Demonstrated ability for research and analysis, along with writing abilities.
- Legal Research Tools: Proficiency in retrieving desired information from various search engines/processes such as eSCR, Manupatra, SCC Online, LexisNexis, Westlaw, etc.
- Computer Literacy: Good knowledge of computer operations and skills in using common software like MS Office.
- Specialized Legal Knowledge: Requisite knowledge of Company Law with IBC (Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code) is essential.
Key Disqualifications
Certain conditions will disqualify candidates from applying for the LRA position:
- Engagement or appointment elsewhere on an honorarium payment basis.
- Involvement in any criminal case (pending or convicted) for an offence involving moral turpitude.
- Facing any disciplinary proceeding before the Bar Council of India, Bar Council of the State, or any other authority.
- Candidates pursuing a Post Graduate Degree in Law or any other program requiring compulsory attendance elsewhere during the expected engagement period are not eligible.
Roles and Responsibilities of an NCLT LRA
As a Law Research Associate, your primary role will be to assist the Hon’ble President/Members of the NCLT. Your duties will be diverse and intellectually stimulating, including:
- Case Preparation: Reading case files, preparing case summaries and notes, and creating chronologies of events.
- Legal Research: Conducting thorough research on facts and law for pending cases, utilizing printed or electronic resources, statutes, resolutions, and texts. You will report research results orally or in writing, analyzing factual and legal aspects.
- Judgment Assistance: Assisting in the preparation of judgments, including researching Case Laws, Articles, Papers, and providing corrections and editing.
- Library and Online Research: Conducting necessary research in the Tribunal’s Member Library, residential libraries, other libraries, or through the internet. You must stay abreast of important rulings from the Supreme Court, High Courts, the Tribunal, and Appellate Tribunal to provide maximum assistance.
- Court Attendance: Attending court, taking notes of arguments from counsel, and researching citations.
- Order Verification: Verifying final orders prepared by the Hon’ble President/Member to identify omissions related to arguments, factual errors, grammar, or sentence construction, and drawing attention to them.
- Citation and Document Verification: Verifying the correctness of precedent citations, party names, and quotations from documents or judgments in final orders.
- File Management: Maintaining and organizing case files.
- Other Contributions: Preparing research or academic papers, speeches, assisting in important conferences, and being aware of court procedures (filing methods, law provisions, case movement).
- Administrative Support: Preparing statistical reports (including timely judgment delivery), maintaining books and research materials, and performing any other work directed by the Hon’ble President/Member.
Remuneration and Contract Details
- Monthly Remuneration: Law Research Associates in both Jaipur and Mumbai Benches will receive a remuneration of Rs. 60,000/- per month.
- No Additional Allowances: LRAs will not be entitled to any Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), residential accommodation, or any other allowances.
- Contract Period: The initial contract period will be one year, extendable further by one year at a time based on performance and requirement, with a maximum engagement period not exceeding three years.
- Undertaking: LRAs are required to give an undertaking to serve for a period of 3 years in NCLT.
- Conduct: During the assignment, LRAs must maintain high standards of integrity, honesty, good moral character, devotion to duty, and utmost secrecy regarding official matters.
- Restrictions: LRAs cannot accept any other assignment, practice as an Advocate in any court or tribunal (must inform the Bar Council), or enroll in any regular course during their engagement.
- Post-Assignment Restriction: An LRA shall not practice as an Advocate for three years from the completion date of engagement in the NCLT court(s) where they worked or before the member(s) they were attached to. However, they are free to appear in any other NCLT court without restraint.

Selection Procedure for NCLT Law Research Associate
The selection process for Law Research Associates will involve a Written Examination and an Interview.
- Interview Focus: During the interview, questions will be asked on the Companies Act, 2013, Insolvency Bankruptcy Code, 2016, and other relevant allied laws.
- Skill Assessment: Candidates will also undergo tests to evaluate their research skills on Company Law, Corporate Insolvency Law, allied laws, and general knowledge. The interview will also assess knowledge, skills in law, general knowledge, research skills on legal matters, and aptitude to work.
- Shortlisting: In case of a large number of applicants, shortlisting may be done based on qualifications, experience, and other relevant parameters.
- No Travel Allowance: Please note that no TA/DA will be admissible for appearing in the interview. The NCLT reserves the right to call only shortlisted candidates for the interview.
