About the Event

The popular discourse on the presence and rights of Transgender community seems to be either absent or has been reduced to a mere pornographic display of issues and
challenges faced by Transgender folx. While we deliberate upon privacy, representation and claiming of public spaces, there remains to be an absence of the Transgender identity in the language of the people. We create new words, new pronouns, yet the exclusion exists. The presence of Transgender in the social and cultural milieu of Indian subcontinent is ever more peculiar to understand. Language spins a distinctive idea of the “other” sex, which is either something to be feared or to be discarded and disposed of.

Through this virtual conference,
• We aim to map discontinuities and contradictions in the Trans Movement through
South Asia.
• Understand the awareness around the movement beyond the urban landscape which is
utterly blind to the ripples that exist in small towns, suburbs and rural areas.
• Learn and engage with the Trans movement in the places and through people away
from the political spotlight.
• Create a safe space where exchange of academic work and experiences may take
place.

We hope to discuss on issues of language, representation, reservation, gender politics, systems of law and justice and invite folx from all fields of life to unpack the
complexities of gender and sexuality. This conference hopes to extend beyond an academic exercise as the written submissions are not restricted to research papers only. We welcome any form of literary work- poems, stories, articles and opinion pieces.
