About the Job
The High Court of Madras is looking to fill 30 vacancies for the role of Research Law Assistants. These positions are available on an ad-hoc basis for a period of one year, and selected candidates may be posted either at the Principal Seat in Madras or the Madurai Bench, depending on administrative needs.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Age: Candidates should not have attained 30 years of age as of January 1 or July 1, preceding the last application date.
- Nationality: Only Indian citizens are eligible.
- Education: Applicants must have a Graduate Degree in Law under recognized patterns (10+2+3+3, 10+2+5, or 10+2+4+3). The degree must be from a university recognized by the Bar Council of India for admission as an Advocate.
- Academic Record: Only candidates who have passed all exams within the duration of their course are eligible. Furthermore, they must have completed their Law Degree within the past five years.
- Restrictions: Candidates pursuing a post-graduate law degree or any other program requiring compulsory attendance are not eligible to apply.
Job Responsibilities
Research Law Assistants will assist Hon’ble Judges in both judicial and administrative tasks, including:
- Summarizing fresh admission matters.
- Preparing synopses of regular hearing matters.
- Attending court sessions, noting down arguments.
- Conducting research work.
- Assisting Judges with academic papers and speeches.
- Preparing headnotes of judgments, if required.
- Performing any additional work as directed by the supervising Judge.
Research Law Assistants assigned to the Registry will undertake additional responsibilities as directed by the supervising authority.
Factors for Disqualification
Applicants should note the following grounds for disqualification:
- Disciplinary actions by the Bar Council, suspensions, or findings of professional misconduct.
- Pending disciplinary proceedings by any authority or court that, in the Court’s opinion, would render the applicant unsuitable for judicial service.
- Being debarred or disqualified by any recruitment agency.
- Dismissal or stigmatic termination from any government, statutory, or local authority employment.
- If involved in or named in an FIR, facing criminal proceedings, or having any criminal history.
- Having a spouse while entering into a marriage or relationship with another individual.
- Misrepresentation, forgery, or other inappropriate conduct during the selection process.
Selection Process
The selection process involves a viva voce (oral interview) conducted either at the Principal Seat in Chennai or the Madurai Bench. The committee may also decide to conduct a screening test if required. Candidates should note that no TA/DA will be provided for the viva voce or screening test.
Honorarium
Selected Research Law Assistants will receive an honorarium of ₹30,000 per month, in line with G.O.(Ms).No.2343, Home(Courts-I) Department.
