Recap of Gujarat Riots

On 27th February, 2002 the coach of Sabarmati Express carrying karsevaks was returning from Ayodhya was burnt down killing 58 people that triggered massive violence across the state of Gujarat.

A day after the burning of the coach of Sabarmati Express, Gulbarg Society was attacked by a mob killing 69 people which included Congress MP Ehsan Jafri.

What was Zaika Jafri's Case?

In 2006 Zaika Jafri urged to file an FIR against officials and politicians including Modi, In 2008 SIT was appointed and in 2012 SIT gave clean chit to Modi after upholding of SIT’s closure report

In 2018 Zaika Jafri and Teesta Setalvad approached the Supreme Court saying that SIT was itself biased in investigating the case and the officers should face the probe. In 2022, The Supreme Court upheld the SIT investigation after reserving its verdict the previous year.

Status of the Cases

In Godhra and post-Godhra cases about 600 people were named and 200 were convicted, with 150 getting life sentences. The trial court has given judgment in eight of these cases, and many families still await justice.

What's Next?

It is likely to be the end of the chapter, as for PM Modi’s name in ‘Larger Conspiracy’ charge. The Supreme praised SIT for its investigation and it also pulled the appellants for questioning the integrity of SIT.
