'Daughters Are Not A Liability; Read Article 14': Justice DY Chandrachud
A divison bench of Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice AS Bopanna was hearing a plea by a daughter seeking maintenance from her estranged father, after her mother's demise.
BACKGROUND
The Supreme Court on 5th October 2020 had directed the father to pay a sum of Rs 2,50,000 to both the daughter and the mother.

The mother died on 6th September 2021. The petitioner (daughter) contended that noamount had been paid towards the arrears of maintenance, i.e., Rs 8,000 per month for the daughter and Rs 400 for the mother.

During the hearing, the Father's advocate said- "she is a liability". Justice Chandrachud quickly retorted by saying that- " "Daughters are not a liability".
Justice Chandrachud further asked the daughter to work hard and concentrate on the Judicial services exam, so that she is not depended upon the father.
